Ok! Let’s jump into this subject! In the first episode in this series I talked about my journey purchasing a camera and what various cameras are used for (by the way I don’t say this in the video but I think I’m returning the camera I got! Email me if you wonder why).

Episode two was all about how I use a green screen and this is How to Beautify your Law Firm video Shoot with Lighting! I love lighting.

“How to Beautify Law Firm Videos with Lighting”

Lighting is everything when it comes to beautiful videos – which also includes happy on-screen talent. If I have all the best lighting setup just right, it makes all the difference from my lawyers saying “I love this video” instead of comments like “I look old”. So what do you need to get perfect lighting.

In this video I’m going to talk about:

  • What you need to light properly
  • How long you need to set up
  • What mistakes to look for

WHAT YOU NEED TO LIGHT PROPERLY
The problem is that many people think you need a 3 point lighting setup. This can be a problem (unless you’re a very symmetrical actor or very young). For me, 3 lights is never enough. That leaves my background dark and creepy looking most of the time and it’s unflattering for the on screen talent.

HERE’S WHAT I LIKE BEST:

  • A person, mannequin or doll – to stand in while I set up the lights and get them right. And if you have 2 people on screen you’ll need to light them both very carefully.
  • At least 4 background lights – To be sure everything in the background is on purpose and tells your story
  • At least 2 small spot lights (I like cordless) to balance the background with the foreground, maybe you’d want to draw attention to something way in the back for instance
  • 3 Softboxes for talent – so their full face is well lit with soft light and there are no shadows
  • 1 Bright for talent – This is optional but I like one bright light added to one side or the other of my talent so the lighting isn’t exactly same on both sides of their face
  • 1 Hair light for talent – This is to differentiate them from the background
  • 1 Ring light for talent – this is to put a splash of light in their eyes
  • 1 spot light for talent – this is to define the chin and put the neck into the shadows

Always light your background first, then the subject, or subjects you’re shooting.

MISTAKES

  • Backgrounds – Make sure everything in frame tells your story
  • Hotspots – This is where there is too much light getting into one portion of your shot and it’s not correctable later. Look for “hot spots”
  • Shadows – look to see that the person’s face doesn’t have strange shadows from their nose or cheeks.
  • Hair Lights – be sure the light does not reach their face. It should be differentiating them from the background

This was a really fun 3 part series! I love video.
