Lawyers: What Goes Wrong with Videographers?

Lawyers! Today I’m sharing what can go wrong when you hire a videographer to do your law practice videos in-house.

I recently had a really cool conversation with Seth Price a lawyer in Washington DC who also does a ton of marketing. So Seth is hiring an in-house videographer. And I wanted to let him and you know what can go wrong.

Low Bar to Entry with Video

So there is ONE problem about hiring a videographer in-house and with video in general today, is the low bar to entry. Whether you’re accustomed to spending lots of money on big budget TV commercials, or you’ve never approached video like in my story in Minnesota, the low bar to entry can be a problem. Let’s look at why:

Low Budget Video in Minnesota

Here’s a firm in Minnesota who hired a local guy who was a video enthusiast. He’d done a few law firm videos once.

The mistake this Minnesota firm made was to have him write the scripts, thinking he’d understand their practice area. He had never done extensive advertising on any of the platforms, but he delivered them the finished videos – which looked nice. But the videos didn’t work to get new clients.

This Minnesota firm spent very little on their videos, but the videos didn’t work at all to get new clients in the door. And no one in the firm had the time to figure out how or why the videos didn’t work.

The low bar to entry mistake Minnesota made, was expecting the videographer to write scripts, upload videos to various platforms, monitor videos and track results. They needed to understand that in order to create videos that work well, they need a lot more skill, or training.

The outcome? The law firm was frustrated because they knew those videos didn’t make any difference for the firm.

TIP: What Should Videographers Do?

The bottom line is that Videographers know how to create beautiful clean videos. That should be enough!

But if you’re expecting more, remember to find out if they have an aptitude for writing, marketing and tracking results and if they don’t and you’re expecting results from your videos, and you want your videographer in charge of getting results… then please train them!

I hope this has been super helpful to you and gives you a ton of inspiration for your new successful projects!
